What’s an ITM-lesson?

In a lesson of the ITM Alexander technique you’re invited to choose an activity that we then look at together. We explore how you move and the way you think about your movements, and your questions and thoughts are the basis for every lesson turn. In addition to talking to each other I use my hands in teaching, with gentle touch, to help you discover how you think and how you move.

Your first lesson will also include a shorter lecture in order to introduce some of the important ideas and principles that we will work on for the rest of our Alexander-travels together. In the ITM we encourage your first lesson activity to be sitting in a chair. Sitting is one of the simplest activities and thus presents a good way of getting to know the basics of an Alexander lesson.

In all following lessons you’re free to choose any activity you want to explore. It can be almost anything that interests you; carrying a heavy backpack, walking, writing at a computer, simply sitting, reciting a poem, make a golf swing, sing, or play an instrument, to mention a few.

In the ITM we prefer to teach in groups, because we can learn so much from each other! Sometimes it’s even easier to learn from watching someone else’s lesson turn than having one yourself. A group lesson always contains a number of lesson turns, in addition to discussions and questions. With that said, of course you’re welcome to book individual lessons if you prefer to do so.

The lessons are always led by the student(s) and the core of every lesson is that it is tailor-made from your, and the group’s, thoughts, questions and needs.

The skills and the tools you learn during your lessons will in time be applicable in many, if not all, areas of your life. It’s far from a quick fix, but instead offers a life long process of learning, development and improvement!

”The Alexander Technique does not teach you anything new to do. Rather, it helps you bring more practical intelligence into what you are already doing, to eliminate stereotyped responses, to deal with habit and change.”

The 5 types of lessons

Introduction

Lecture + lesson

Everyone that has their first lessons will get this same start, no matter if it’s in a group setting or an individual lesson

Group lesson

A slightly longer session with a small group, containing discussions and individual lesson turns in front of the rest of the group.

This is the most common form of an itm-lesson

Approx. 1-1,5 hours depending on the size of the group

Individual lesson

When you prefer individual lessons, or if scheduling with a group proves too difficult

Approx. 30 mins

weekend Workshop

Sometimes the best way of learning in this work is to immerse yourself in the technique for a period of time!

A workshop is usually between 1 day to 3 days (friday evening to sunday evening)

A workshop always starts with the introductory lecture and then continues from there with lesson turns, discussions and other learning.

itm summer workhops

Every summer offers 3 longer workshops in 3 different countries in Europe, Cork in Ireland, Odenwald in Germany & Cirencester in the U.K.

a Summer workshop is a fantastic way of immersing in the Alexander technique, no matter if you’re totally new to the work or have a lot of experience of it. It is also a great opportunity to get to learn from many different ITM-teachers from different countries and walks of life.

these workshops are over 5 days, friday evening to tuesday lunch
